Twenty Billion Neurons (20BN)

Role: 3D Artist/Technical Artist
Engine: Unity 3D
Platform: iOS devices
Company: Twenty Billion Neurons
Employment time: 7 Months (Internship)

I worked at 20BN on FitnessAlly is an AI-driven fitness app for Android and Apple devices.

The fitness trainer avatar provides real time feedback towards the user on their exercise performance and suggests exercise regimens based on the user’s fitness goals.

I completed this internship opportunity during my 4th year at Sheridan college.

My contributions

During my time at Twenty Billion Neurons, there were two main things I contributed to the project: a new gym environment for the fitness trainer, and a series of narrative props that would appear based on the time of year. I also investigated a post-processing package and tested its functionality, usability, and performance on the app during play. Any findings were shared with the team.

The new gym environment

After some back-and-forth between myself, my manager, and product owner, I created some gym concepts which then led to me modelling, texturing, and implementing the entire set in Unity. Because previously completed environments were of typical gyms, I was asked to design a home gym. The gym concepts were initially shared with everyone on the team to get feedback on not only the visuals, but also the functionality of the space.

Below is the chosen environment model in rendered using Blender’s Cycle engine. Please click here for more environment renders and an in-depth breakdown of the environment.

Below is the environment implemented in Unity with the fitness trainer in the scene. Lighting was also baked to help with optimization.

Something I kept in mind was the visuals behind the fitness trainer, as that would be the parts of the room that the viewer would see the most often. There were three camera positions which would give the player various views of the room. With feedback from my manager, I was able to adjust the textures and post processing volume in Unity to best match hues of the fitness trainer.

Narrative Props

Below are some of the the props I modelled for the project. As with the new environment, I implemented them into the Unity project so that the developers would easily access them when they are programming its functionality. More detailed views of a few of the props can be found here.

Phone
Rainboots
